Rocky Mountain Co-Op

June 25, 2017

Parli/NPTE Style Camp

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is with great pleasure to announce the call for the third annual Rocky Mountain Co-op. Join us in colorful Colorado for 5 jam-packed days of debate camp at Colorado State University-Pueblo this summer!

I know we have just finished the season, but I wanted to start spreading the word as we all begin to finalize our budges and prepare for next season.

Coaches – use that “use it or lose it” budget to send your students to camp! It is a great opportunity for students to refine their skills before next season. Also, anyone interested in coaching at the RMC this year, please contact me! We’d be happy to have you.

Basic Information:

Dates: June 25th – July 1st (Check-in the 25th and check-out the 1st)

Cost: $365.00
*The cost of camp covers a student’s housing, food, as well as provides a small camp fee to allow us to subsidize coach housing for all those attending and costs for the camp tournament.

Commuter Cost: $100.00**
**Students may commute to camp and not stay in the dorms if they choose. This cost still aims to subsidize camp costs for coaches wishing to also attend.

Google Hangout Cost: $100.00
We know that many folks can’t afford to make it to Colorado for camp. We are going to offer a virtual camp attendance option for folks this year. Each virtual camper would get invited to a Google Hangout for each of the lectures throughout camp.

Coaches: We already have a fantastic coaching staff lined up for you this year.
Committed coaches thus far include: Jared Bressler – CSU-Pueblo, Quintin Brown – Washburn, Matt Gayetsky – UT-Tyler, Rob Layne – Utah, Dan Lyon – Washburn, Ben Mann – Utah, Johnathan McGuire – Nevada, Grace Miller – Nevada, Julian Plaza – Colorado College, Mike Smith – Missouri Western University, Kathryn Starkey – CSU-Pueblo.

Registration:
The deadline for registration is June 10th (you can still attend camp if you do not register by the 10th, but this is the deadline for the dorms. CSU-Pueblo Auxiliary Services needs a final number of those staying in the dorms by this day to ensure proper staffing of the buildings, availability for other camps, etc.) Also, please register sooner rather than later. Registration helps us determine how many coaches we can bring on board each year, so if you know you’re going to come, please register as soon as you can!

Why attend camp:
We aim to provide an incredible educational opportunity for students of all experience levels. We plan to offer labs for students who are both novice and experienced to be as accommodating as possible.
Learn from the best. We will have coaches from various programs across the country here to teach you the ins and outs of parliamentary debate. If you wish to also help volunteer your time to coach at the camp, we would love to have you! We will cover your housing and meals during your attendance.
Students will participate in 12+ debate rounds, 8+ hours of lectures ranging from how to write an Aff for novice debaters to advanced counterplan theory for more advanced debaters, and 12+ hours of drills and skills development over the course of the camp. At the conclusion of the co-op, we plan to send all attendees home with all research conducted during the course of the week. Set yourself up for success next season!

Colorado is awesome:
Since the weather in Colorado is amazing in the summer, we plan to incorporate fun outdoor activities each evening. Wellness is an important facet of our lives, and it’s overlooked too often in debate. After labs each night, we will play disc golf, Frisbee, and other fun activities to help create a sense of camaraderie in the name of wellness promotion.

Accommodations and travel:
CSU-Pueblo is right down the road from Denver International Airport if you choose to fly to camp. We provide shuttles free of charge for anyone who decides to fly to help you with your travel costs and arrangements. If flying, please land before 5pm on June 25 and depart at or after 11am on July 1.
We have negotiated the cheapest possible rate for those wishing to stay in the dorms here on campus. Each student room is a four-person suite (two in each room) with your own bathroom for privacy. Coaches will be in their own room with a shared bathroom. Our dorms have been newly constructed in the last five years, so it should be an enjoyable place for you to stay. All dorms have a front desk attendant working from 8am to 10pm to help you with your needs, and someone is available on-call after 10pm each evening.
You should be sure to bring your own sheets or a sleeping bag, towel and pillow with you. We’ve been told linen packages exist, but to be on the safe side, I’d just bring your own!
