2016 North American Universities Debating Championships

October 21, 2016

Hi Everyone!

Carleton University Debate & Speech is happy to announce we are bidding to host the 2016 North American Universities Debating Championships. You can find details on our bid below:

Why Ottawa?
Ottawa is Canada’s picturesque capital, showcasing our country’s grand history. Don’t think that it’s all museums and government buildings though; Ottawa has a lot of fun activities, including great nightlife. It is very accessible, falling within a short drive of many major cities:
• 2 hours to Kingston, Montreal, Syracuse
• 4 hours to Toronto, Ithaca, Geneva, Burlington
• 6 hours to Boston
Ottawa is also serviced by an international airport, and is well connected to the Greyhound and Amtrak service lines. Given our proximity to several US cities, and an off weekend for many APDA schools on the proposed dates, expect a large American draw!

Dates:
October 21st to 23rd, 2016

Debate:
There will be 6 preliminary rounds, followed by a break to Quarter-finals. We will hold a Novice final if there are enough novice teams present to justify it. All rounds will be in British Parliamentary style.

Adjudication:
We will offer transport reimbursement to independent adjudicators with a minimum of $2,000; we hope to increase this amount as more funding becomes available.
We are excited to announce the following two Chief Adjudicators: Mo Niaz and Fanele Mashwama.
Mo is a former Carleton debater, now a member of Hart House. He is a Hart House IV finalist, NAUDC Semi-finalist, Chancellor’s Cup Champion, and two-time Canadian BP Champs Finalist. He was recently an IA at USU’S, the HWS Round Robin, and the Colgate Open.
Fanele is a senior at Harvard College. He is the current WUDC Champion, in addition to being a past WUDC finalist, Yale IV Finalist, USU’s Finalist, and Brandeis IV Champion. He recently served on the adjudication core for Morehouse USU’s.
We will be selecting 2-3 Deputy Chief Adjudicator’s through an open application process, looking to ensure regional representation and gender balance on the CA team. Please follow this page for announcements about the applications.

Registration:
We are limiting the overall tournament size to 100 Teams, with an initial school cap of 5 teams. The judging requirement will be N/2, rounded down.
We are setting the registration fee at or under $170 per team and $85 per judge. We anticipate being able to bring this down. As always we are willing to negotiate reg breaks for teams travelling from far away, or schools which commit to bringing experienced adjudicators.
Registration will open on August 10th. Please email naudc2016@gmail.com with the number of teams and judge spots you would like to request.

Socials:
Carleton has always been a club which believes in having fun. To bring this spirit to NAUDC, we are planning on having TWO socials; open to those both over and under 19.

Housing:
We are currently negotiating a group rate with a hotel located in Downtown Ottawa. More details will be posted as they become available.
Limited crash housing will be available, with preference given to teams travelling the furthest.

Cheers! Hope to see you all in Ottawa!
